Slipping through My Fingers is one of the most melodious songs of ABBA.  A heart touching song, it touches a raw chord, as it celebrates the love between a parent and her growing child.

“Slipping Through My Fingers” is a song from ABBA’s album The Visitors (1981). The song was  written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson with lead vocals by Agnetha Fältskog. In a gist, the song is about a mother who has to cope up with the fact that her baby daughter is growing up quickly and the fact that that before she could know it, the girl is old enough to go to school.

The inspiration Slipping Through My Fingers  was Ulvaeus’ and Fältskog’s daughter, Linda Ulvaeus, who was seven at the time the song was written.

The song was only released as a single in Japan (Discomate, 1981),in the form of a red vinyl promo single for The Coca-Cola Company with nothing on the b-side except of a printed picture of the group.

There is a Spanish version of Slipping Through My Fingers known as ”Se Me Está Escapando”. The song was included as a single in 1982 and also in the South American versions of The Visitors.

Slipping Through My Fingers Lyrics

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that Im losing her forever
And without really entering her world
Im glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see whats in her mind
Each time I think Im close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when shes gone theres that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can’t deny

What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
(slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did but most we didnt
And why I just dont know

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see whats in her mind
Each time I think Im close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers…

Slipping through my fingers all the time

Schoolbag in hand she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile…
